Welcome to Gissing Children's Centre

This marvellous amenity located right at the heart of Gissing was established in 1982 by local families, following the closure of the former County Primary School in 1978.

Since its inception Gissing Children's Centre has become a well-established, non-profit making organisation which as well as running a very successful daily pre-school also runs other facilities for the under 14s in the village of Gissing and it's surrounding parishes. These currently include: a parent and toddler group, holiday playschemes and outdoor adventure evenings.

In our most recent Ofsted inspection (May 2016) released by Ofsted 14th June - we received a grading of 'outstanding in all areas' (Effectiveness of the leadership and management; Quality of teaching, learning and assessment; Personal development, behaviour and welfare; Outcomes for children) with comments included, such as: 'The setting provides a rich and vibrant environment'; 'children flourish and make excellent progress'; 'the setting places the highest priority on working closely with all families'; 'staff skillfully interact with children'; 'staff go to considerable lengths to ensure children's individual needs are well met.' If you wish to view the full report, this can be accessed at: This is the Pre-School's third 'outstanding' award in nine years!

This year we are aiming to make major improvements to our outdoor area. We have ambitious plans to provide greater opportunities for physical activity, freedom and movement and experiences that are unique to the outdoors. We are planning a much greener space featuring a covered sand play area, a 'hobbit' house, mud kitchen, digging area and extensive water play features whilst also looking to provide calmer areas for relaxation amongst wooden planters and seating.

"For many children, playing outdoors at their pre-school or nursery may be the only chance they have to play outdoors safely and freely. It is essential that they get frequent and regular opportunities  to explore and learn in the outdoor environment and redesigning our existing area will enable them to do this on a daily basis".

The grandfather of children who previously attended the Pre-School at Gissing writes of the Centre: "Deep in the Norfolk countryside, known only to a privileged few, exists a very special place that caters solely for the well being of the children who are fortunate enough to go there". He goes on to describe the Children's Centre as having "an atmosphere of 'Family' – an atmosphere of harmony, happiness and enjoyment. With the degree of involvement of all concerned, staff, helpers and parents the net effect is that Gissing Children's Centre feels like ours". This perfectly describes the ethos that has evolved since 1982 and is what we wish to perpetuate within this unique community resource.
